Vostok: The Loch Ness of Antarctica - A Journey to the Abyss with Steve Alten
Steve Alten's Vostok is a gripping science fiction thriller that explores the depths of Lake Vostok, a subglacial lake buried beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. The novel follows a team of Russian scientists who are drilling into the lake in search of life, and the horrors they encounter when they finally break through.
The novel opens with a prologue set in 1983, when a Soviet drilling team first discovers Lake Vostok. The team is horrified to find that the lake is inhabited by strange creatures that they cannot identify. The creatures attack the team, and only a few manage to escape.

Twenty years later, a new team of Russian scientists returns to Lake Vostok to finish the job. The team is led by Dr. Andrei Markov, a brilliant scientist who is determined to find out what lurks in the depths of the lake. The team is also joined by Dr. Marina Petrova, a marine biologist who is skeptical of Markov's claims that the lake is home to life.
As the team drills deeper into the lake, they begin to experience strange and inexplicable events. They hear strange noises coming from the depths of the lake, and they see strange creatures swimming in the water. The team is also plagued by nightmares, and they begin to lose their minds.
As the team nears the bottom of the lake, they finally make contact with the creatures that live there. The creatures are giant squid-like monsters that are incredibly powerful and intelligent. The creatures attack the team, and only a few manage to escape.
The novel ends with a chilling epilogue set in the present day. Dr. Markov is the only survivor of the expedition, and he is now a recluse who lives in a cabin in the Arctic. Markov knows that the creatures in Lake Vostok are still alive, and he is afraid that they will one day escape and destroy the world.
Vostok is a well-written and suspenseful thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats from beginning to end. Alten does a great job of creating a sense of atmosphere and suspense, and the novel's characters are well-developed and relatable.
If you are a fan of science fiction thrillers, then you will definitely want to check out Vostok. The novel is a fast-paced and exciting read that will stay with you long after you finish it.
