John Nelson was a frontiersman, scout, and guide who played a significant role in the exploration and settlement of the American West. He was born in Kentucky in 1794, and as a young man, he moved to Missouri, where he learned the ways of the wilderness from Native American tribes.

In 1811, Nelson joined the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a hunter and scout. He proved to be a valuable member of the expedition, providing food for the explorers and helping them to navigate the treacherous terrain. After the expedition, Nelson continued to explore the West, and he eventually became a guide for fur traders and settlers.

In 1832, Nelson was hired by the U.S. government to guide a group of missionaries to Oregon. The missionaries were traveling overland, and they needed an experienced guide to help them find their way through the wilderness. Nelson agreed to lead the group, and he successfully guided them to Oregon.

After his work with the missionaries, Nelson continued to guide settlers to Oregon and California. He also served as a scout for the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1850, Nelson settled in California, where he lived until his death in 1878.
