Early Life and Education
Raye Montague was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1886. Her father was a professor at MIT, and her mother was a writer. Montague showed an early interest in math and science, and she excelled in her studies.
In 1904, Montague enrolled at MIT, where she studied naval architecture and marine engineering. She was the first woman to receive a degree in this field from MIT, and she graduated in 1908.
Career
After graduating from MIT, Montague worked as a draftsman for the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1911, she joined the staff of the Bureau of Construction and Repair of the U.S. Navy.
At the Bureau of Construction and Repair, Montague worked on a variety of projects, including the design of battleships, cruisers, and destroyers. She also developed new methods for ship construction and repair.
In 1923, Montague was promoted to head of the Bureau of Construction and Repair. She was the first woman to hold this position, and she served in this role until 1941.
During her tenure as head of the Bureau of Construction and Repair, Montague oversaw the design and construction of many of the ships that the U.S. Navy used in World War II. She also played a key role in the development of new technologies, such as radar and sonar.
After retiring from the Navy in 1941, Montague continued to work as a consultant in the field of naval engineering. She also wrote several books and articles on the subject.
