There are 10 coins lying on a table. One of the coins is either heads or tails up. The remaining 9 coins are all heads up. You can flip any 3 coins at a time. Can you determine which coin is different and whether it is heads or tails up?

Flip the first three coins. If two are heads and one is tails, then the tails coin is the different coin. If all three are heads, then flip the next three coins. If two are heads and one is tails, then the tails coin is the different coin. If all three are heads, then the last four coins are all heads up, so the different coin must be the first coin you flipped, which is tails up.
